Many municipalities throughout the United States have started to rescind tax breaks to corporations who promised jobs and failed to deliver. Often the reason companies like Wal-mart and Target got tax breaks in the first place was through their promise to created jobs. Yet with many municipalities throughout the USA facing shortfalls on their budgets, many are starting to hold these accompanies accountable for their promises. With Atlanta struggling to fund important budget items like police, should Atlanta look at what other cities are doing? In Dekalb, Illinois, Target is facing an additional $600,000 property tax bill. They promised 500 new jobs in exchange for a tax break, and fell short by 66. Considering they got such an excellent deal, and failed to deliver, there is a growing consensus saying, "a deal's a deal". In Saint Louis county, Missouri, officials informed Pfizer that if it proceeds with cutting 600 jobs, as planned, they will reconsider the $7 million in tax breaks they promised to give the company for the next 10 years. Is it time for Atlanta to start looking at which corporations failed to deliver the badly needed jobs in exchange for tax breaks? |
