The Rialto Theater 2007-08 season opens on a profound note with Geri Allen’s remarkable “For the Healing of the Nations.” In addition to Ms. Allen, this major work for chorus and jazz orchestra features jazz luminaries Oliver Lake, Nnenna Freelon, Dwight Andrews, Andy Bey, and Mary Stallings with a full chorus. Commissioned as a tribute to those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, “For the Healing of the Nations” is a sacred jazz suite in two movements. Composer and pianist, Allen’s music transcends language, culture, genre, and time while demonstrating a devotion to the swinging roots of jazz. Respectful of tradition but never bound by it, her work continuously journeys into adventurous territory in search of new musical avenues.
This is a Rialto Series performance.
